Festival of Politics Report: Annie Lennox Scotland’s HIV/Aids representative?

logo_sing150As reported Annie Lennox spoke in the main chaimber of the Scotish parliament today at 1pm at the the Festival of Politics presenting The SING Campaign and discussing the HIV/AIDS pandemic with Alex Fergusson MSP, Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, and the audience. After apologizing for not coming to the Festival of Politics last year and thanking her physiotherapist for making her able to walk again (a back surgery prevented her visit last year), Annie Lennox revealed that she’s going to lay a paving stone in the middle of Princes Street in Edinburgh tomorrow to honour and remind Nelson Mandela who was a big influence in her decision process of founding the SING campaign.

Next she showed three SING short films, the campaign anniversary one summarizing what it’s all about, one about an 8-year-old HIV-positive boy who suffered from tuberculosis and one about Avelile and TAC. All three films touched the audience and the presenter very much. In the following discussion of the problems of HIV/Aids in Africa and the western world, Annie Lennox said that the new health minister of South Africa unfortunately didn’t go on the announced field-trip with Annie and TAC members because he had to deal with the swine-flew which gets the amount of press coverage than the HIV/Aids pandemic should get as well.

Time went by quickly and the hour ended with a number of questions from the audience, e.g. about what someone not being able to donate money to the SING campaign could do. Annie answered that everyone should try to get educated e.g. via the official SING website.

090818_alscottishparliament06The question of how to raise awareness in Scotland was passed on by Annie to the host Alex Fergusson MSP asking him if he would see a possibility to make her the new Scottish representative for women, children and HIV/Aids. Fergusson said that in a parliament nothing is impossible (replied by a laughing Annie Lennox with “See, that’s how they talk!!!”) and insured her to discuss the question afterward with her again.

We are looking forward to hearing what the results were of this discussion.
