Annie Lennox received honorary degree at the University of Edinburgh
Yesterday Annie Lennox spoke in her blog about the privilege of receiving an honorary doctorate today:
“Tomorrow I’m heading for Edinburgh University, where they have apparently deemed me fit to receive an honorary doctorate, which is extraordinary, considering that my parents told me ( with the very best intentions) that I’d end up in a factory if I didn’t stick in at school. So…as the wonderful David Byrne asked in the glory days of Talking Heads…”How did I get here”????”
Today the press reported about the ceremony with some quotes by Annie:
Annie Lennox has said she felt privileged to be awarded with an honorary degree
The musician, who received the honour from the University of Edinburgh, said she hoped it would “inspire” other people. Former Eurythmics star Lennox, has campaigned to raise awareness of HIV and Aids in Africa. And she backed a new study released which looked at the needs of children with HIV in Scotland.
Speaking after receiving the degree on Tuesday, she said: “It’s an incredible honour and privilege to be acknowledged by the good people of Edinburgh University in this way. In another incarnation I would have loved to have taken a degree in anthropology or psychology but, as a moderate renegade, my university has turned out to be the one of life. I hope this might inspire anyone who’s ever thought that they were ‘useless’ not to necessarily draw that conclusion … especially if they’re a woman over the age of 45.”
Explaining the decision to award the honorary degree, a University of Edinburgh spokeswoman said: “Annie Lennox is just as famous these days for her humanitarian work for many charities and causes as for her past 30 years of singing and songwriting.” (from Metro.co.uk)
